I have definitely found the training to be helpful at work on multiple occasions so far. In one instance, a coworker said that the gun was American made. I was able to quickly explain that the American company name was the importer. I then showed him the manufacturer name and location on the opposite side of the frame, as well as some Spanish Proof Marks.
The second time was on a search warrant where a Detective said it was not necessary to take a “receiver” and that we should only take the two handguns. I was able to explain that the receiver is the part considered to be a firearm which would allow for a third count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Lara H., Evidence Specialist, Seminole County, FL. Sheriff’s Office
I want to thank you and your colleague for giving an excellent firearms course. The legal stuff from the ATF perspective was pure gold, especially the debunking of many gun show myths.
Sr. Development Staff Member, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
I can truly say the online class has vastly increased my knowledge base.
Greg R. Pensacola, FL Police Department
Your testimony was very professional and very helpful. You were
clear, concise and neutral. We could not have asked for more and could not
have done this without you.
S.M. Attorney New Mexico
…if you in the area of any one of these course, they are a “must do”. I thought I knew a lot about guns and the laws….I didn’t know anything until I went to this course….and no..I’m not getting any compensation from this company…just a guy that took the course and was very much impressed.
Kevin G. Police officer Maine
It was a pleasure attending your course. Its not easy these days to impress this old dog, you and IFSA exceeded my expectations, you are every bit of what defines professional training group. I look forward to staying connected with IFSA. As I continue with my teaching gigs, I plan on spreading the word about IFSA and will encourage those that are worthy to take your course.
Ralph G. Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement
Thanks for a great class.
This course was great. I would recommend it for all law enforcement officers
Sandra A. Correctional Officer Miami-Dade SO
I want to thank you and your partners/owners on having an excellent product. The presentation that I attended at the Shot Show was the best presentation of the whole event.
I can not imagine any gun dealer not wanting to take this complete course.
Terry Rush President NetBallistics, LLC
Thanks, I enjoyed the course and even with having years of experience in the subject matter I learned a great deal. I look forward to working with you in the future.
Lewis Firearms Examiner Forensic Evidence, Inc.
A recommendation to others from an attendee in St. Louis:
Last week, six from our Lab attended the “Firearm Technology and Specialist Training” fully described in the attached. It was also attended by MSHP Examiners, SLMPD Examiners, ISP Examiners, and Chicago PD Examiners, among others. This training was phenomenal! I highly recommend taking advantage of this training, even if it is only online. Learn more at www.GunLearn.com .
In short, I get nothing for promoting this training. But from one AFTE Examiner to another, I credit this course for putting some tools in my toolbox and believe it has a lot to offer anyone no matter their experience. It won’t help you on the microscope, but it will provide you with the knowledge you need to answer the questions that arise from your evidence, your customers, and Attorneys. I learned much, including what I didn’t know I didn’t know, what I should have known but didn’t, and even what I thought I knew but was mistaken. I now possess a much better understanding of the applicable federal definitions and laws, and the confidence to go with it!
I’m also sending the attached to tempt you. Senior Instructor Daniel O’Kelly (Dan; retired ATF and instructing this topic for ~20 years) expressed specific interest in providing this training to your area (Kansas City proper or nearby to be accessible to more Midwest clientele). Because my Academy has no contacts established in that area, I mentioned that I would put this information in front of someone. Lucky you! All I ask is that you consider taking advantage of this training, share this with any training contacts you have (Academy, Department Training Coordinator, etc.), and consider hosting this course. It cost our Academy nothing to host, and the attendees only cost $400 each ($500 if you include post-training testing to achieve the Accredited Certification). If the roster is full enough, free seats may be provided.
Trust me. I don’t advertise for others, but I was on the edge of my seat for all three days of this course, and Dan never lost my interest or attention. I believe you and yours will have a similar experience.”Mike W. St. Louis Co Sheriff’s Office
The training already came in handy. One of our crime scene guys stopped me yesterday and said he had this strange rifle that looked like an AK47 but it was real small and only had what looked like a pistol grip and looked like it was made with a short barrel. I asked him if it was a Draco and he said “yeah! That’s what it was!” He couldn’t believe it when I told him it was classified as a pistol. I explained to him that it was a pistol because it has a chamber which is integral to the barrel, a grip which is at an angle to the bore and it is designed to be fired with one hand. He was under the same impression I was that the classification somehow involved the cartridge the firearm was designed for.
Proud Pupil
Tom G. Merto East Forensic Science Lab
Outstanding! I wasn’t sure what to expect but this exceeded anything I could have imagined. He’s doing just what he ought to be doing, teaching those who don’t know but who want to know about the legal areas pertaining to firearms and firearm laws. I think that all of our Firearm Examiners should take this course because it will build an incredibly solid foundation to build upon with the rest of their training.
Tom G. Metro-East Forensic Science Laboratory Belleville, IL
Excellent course. Dan’s credibility and real-world experience are also important. I believe others could benefit from this course because of the straight-forward information and the great presentation of information.
Steven S. Chicago, IL Police Department
All Officers would benefit from the information taught in this class. Great Class with a great Instructor.
Chris G. Brentwood, MO PD
It was great. A lot of useful information. It was all relevant info that will be beneficial. We haven’t had training like this before. It’s an opportunity to learn a lot about the topic.
Ed D. St. Louis Co. Sheriff’s Office
Top notch! Vey informative. Outstanding knowledge and ability to clarify subject matter, expertise unrivaled. This type of expert training brings a professional edge to law enforcement. Thank you for your support of the firearm community.
D.J. Police Officer and Firearm Dealer Riverview, MOPD
The quality of the course is very high. The Classification portion was very helpful. The info taught will aid Firearm Examiners in a lab setting. One of the best courses I have been to thus far in my career,
Anonymous St. Louis, MO
The quality of this course is on point. I learned so much, way too much to list. The Firearm Classification would be the biggest. I also learned a lot about Mechanical Operations and Cycle of Operations. I am a forensic chemist as well as a NIBIN/IBIS Technician, so this vastly increases my knowledge of firearms. Mr. O’Kelly could only be more knowledgeable if he were a firearm himself. This course is jam packed with information. Thank you.
Christina R. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office
I would recommend this course because this is a subject matter that there is not a lot of knowledge about out there.
Jeff H. Edmundson, MO Police Dept.
Excellent! Cannot be beat. There is no other source for this volume or quantity of information. I’m a 25-year Officer in the lab as a Firearm Examiner for 14 years. I’ve never been to training this fantastic (volume of information, depth of discussions, pace of learning, etc…).
Mike W. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office
Quality of this course was outstanding. Great demonstration of different types of weapons. Dan’s knowledge of this course is outstanding. His past experiences are conveyed in a very professional manner. I believe this training can be beneficial to road officers to firearms experts.
Anonymous St. Louis, MO
Very good class which incorporates multiple ways of learning. I would Dan an expert and pioneer for this.
Jason D. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office
Informative. Should be in all academies for officers and firearm examiners. Will most definitely recommend the class to others and enjoyed the class!
Katherine C. St. Louis, MO PD
I enjoyed taking this course very much. It provided a great amount of useful information. Every topic covered will be very useful to my job. The class was very organized. I would recommend this this course, especially for crime lab employees and police officers.
Harold M. Chicago, Il Police Department
