Gary W. Mayer, SCPO Detective – Retired
Mr. Mayer has 25+ years of experience in Forensic Ballistics and has been a recognized expert witness within the discipline over 300 times in both State and Federal courts. He has extensive experience in firearms identification, operability testing, distance determinations and has conducted hundreds of microscopic comparisons of discharged projectiles, discharged casings, cartridges and shot shells. Mr. Mayer has test fired and identified over 4,000 cases to date. He began his 25+ year law enforcement career with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office in Newark, New Jersey serving both as a uniform Sheriff’s Officer and as a Detective in their Ballistic Unit. Mr. Mayer continued his distinguished law enforcement career as a Detective with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office in Somerville, New Jersey where he created and developed their forensic ballistic laboratory and served as a Senior Firearms & Toolmark Examiner and Training Officer. He has numerous law enforcement and professional awards. Mr. Mayer is a Life Member and Former Board Member of the New York Microscopical Society and a Founding Member of the New Jersey Forensic Firearm Examiner Association. He is also a graduate of the Certified Firearm Specialist (CFS) program through the International Firearm Specialist Academy.
